Welsh hair used to help Gulf of Mexico oil slick

Generous Kieran McCann will have a close shave with charity on Thursday by getting his head shaved in aid of the oil slick near the Gulf of Mexico.

Kieran, a Student Liaison Officer for Cardiff Council, is participating in a ‘Hair Today Gone Tomorrow’ hair appeal at 10am on May 20 with Johnsons Hairdressers to raise money  for Matter of Trust – a charity which links up recycled goods with causes that need them.

All hair from the salon and his head shave will be used to help fight the oil slick will be sent to the charity as they are co-coordinating the collection of hair, fur and tights that are needed to make booms and mats to mop up the leakage devestating the area (as the video above shows).

Kieran said: “I have been growing my hair for over two years but when I saw what Matter of Trust was doing I had to get involved.

Kieran has set up a Just Giving page for his head shave, where people can make donations to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) which protects endangered wildlife and environments, tackles climate change and promotes sustainable use of resources.

He added: “Not only will the hair be put to good use but I hope any donations people make will help the WWF with their work to protect endangered wildlife and environments”.
Johnsons Hairdressers is giving everyone the opportunity to join in the campaign by offering free head shaves on Thursday 27th May.
