Strict rubbish guidelines operating in Riverside

A “zero tolerance” approach is to be adopted by Cardiff Council following the launch of its ‘Clean Up Riverside’ campaign.

Letters have been sent to Riverside residents and those who fail to comply with the pre-defined waste guidelines will be targeted with a £100 fine.

Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Margaret Jones said: “We want to make sure the area remains clean and our education officers will be visiting residents to talk through the guidelines.”

The scheme starts this week and Cardiff Council’s education team will visit homes to talk rubbish, recycling and the correct methods of presenting waste for kerb-side collection.

The area has been monitored since wheelie bins were introduced and during this time, 540 actions have been recorded throughout the area relating to green bag contamination, bins on highways, side waste and waste put out on the wrong week or day.

The leaflet contains the full set of guidelines, but here are just a few examples:

* Waste should be placed on the kerbside by 6am on the day of collection but no earlier than 4pm the day before.

* Waste should be placed out in the correct bin/bag:-
Green Wheeled Bins are for compostable garden and food waste only. No green bags can be put into green bins.
Black Wheeled Bins are for all non-recyclable waste and can be placed out for collection weekly. All general waste bags must be contained within this bin and the lid must be closed. Any waste placed at the side of the bin or on top of the bin will not be collected.
Green Bags are for recyclables only and should be placed out for collection fortnightly.

* Bins must be taken back in by 9am the day after collection

Residents’ questions or concerns about this process, or any other issues relating to waste collection, should be addressed to Connect 2 Cardiff on 02920 872087.

#Tweet_Opinion: You now need a rubbish degree to put your bins out.
