Cardiff seagulls: You have been warned!

He's watching you! (pic ©finaleforum)

It often feels like there are more seagulls than people in the city and with the breading season here, things could get worse.

A leaflet offering tips to keep the gulls at bay (or even down the Bay) has been issued by Cardiff Council.

According to the leaflet, “businesses are advised to: Dispose of edible litter in gull-proof hidden bins…Consider using parasols. These tend to “hide” food from seagulls’ vision”.

The crafty birds are not easily fold however and whoever wrote the leaflet has obviously never sat in a pub beer garden or on a picnic table where they swoop and snatch your food at any given opportunity…even with a parasol.

Yes, the seemingly awake for 24-hour predators that have free reign over the city with their constant squawking are a bit of a nuisance, but they are much cleverer than this leaflet would have you believe.

To help further reduce the numbers, council’s Pest Control and Waste Management team “offers a service to commercial premises, where eggs are carefully replaced with plastic imitations,” according to the leaflet.
This sea-cull will not only test the IQ of the Cardiff seagull, it is bound to face tough scrutiny from wildlife charities like the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).

Only time will tell.
