Repatriation flight among majority of UK flights affected by Icelandic volcano

FURTHER UPDATE: All UK flights remain grounded until at least 7pm tonight, when the situation will be assessed again.

UPDATE:All flights to/from UK airports will be grounded until 7am tomorrow, at the earliest.

A volcanic ash cloud has disrupted 90% of UK flights, including an Afghanistan repatriation flight.

Fusilier Jonathan Burgess, 20, of 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, was killed in the Nad Ali area of Helmand Province last week and the plane transporting his body had to land two hours early due to an erupting Icelandic volcano.

The repatriation flight o Fusilier Burgess, whos partner is due to give birth to their first child next month, was brought forward two hours to 0900 BST at RAF Lyneham.

He was killed whilst on patrol with colleagues near Showal.

At the moment all flights from Cardiff Airport have been grounded due to the volcanic ash cloud that could damage plane engines

“We hope to have an update on the situation soon,” said a spokesperson for Cardiff International Airport.
