Happy 6 month anniversary St David’s 2

St David’s 2 has been a Cardiff resident for a whole six months now and the visions of towering cranes shrouded by a blanket of dust are nothing but a distant memory.

It houses newcomers to the city like All Saints, Hugo Boss and not forgetting John Lewis.

It’s hard to believe that it was only half a year ago that we were greeted by stilt walkers, a DJ set and our own version of Take Your Pick with perspex boxes dotted around the new epicentre of Wales’ shopping experience.

Of course, we can’t forget the trusty, long-standing pillars of the retail community- the arcades.

It is their quirks St David’s 2 aimed to emulate as they bring the unique charm to a bustling city to prevent it from becoming just like any other in the UK.

Has this really worked?

Don’t you get sucked in to the world of glossy facades, beaming signs battling for your attention and the word ‘sale’ decorating the generic building?

You forget you’re in Cardiff and get transported to one lifeless world of commercial attractions, where each shopping centre looks just as aesthetically unchallenging as the next.

…Until you step out of that world through a high, glossy door and are welcomed by The Hayes and all the hub of the arcades has to offer.

The comforting, almost unchanged but far from modern arcades standing in all their glory and the soothing sight of Spillers oozing character that no new complexes could ever capture.

St David’s 2, on its half-year anniversary still has space for many more shops so all is not rosy as it seems.

It is the arcades that have benefitted from its opening as it brings people to an area of town they may not have previously ventured into and their quirks are all the more favourable when they stand next to a shiny white and chrome architectural alien.

Hip, hip hooray.
