Police probing “unprovoked attack” on disabled man

A disabled man awaiting a heart and lung transplant was assaulted in Aberdare during the bank holiday weekend.

Martyn Griffiths, 32, was knocked unconscious following the incident which took place near New Look in Aberdare town centre on Saturday.

A South Wales Police spokesperson confirmed: “One male has been arrested and bailed and inquiries are continuing.”

Mr Griffiths has battled health problems throughout his life and received one of his mother, Janette Leonard’s kidneys in an operation 10 years ago.

“He’s very physically disabled and he’s very vulnerable. He wanted to go out with his friends so off he went,” said Ms Leonard.

She spoke of her anguish at seeing her son with his face “battered” but he was being treated at Prince Charles Hospital.

South Wales Police are appealing for members of the public to come forward with any information they may have.
