Green Cardiff supporting Earth Hour.

Things will go bump in the night tomorrow as the city supports an international Earth Hour.

For one hour between 8.30pm and 9.30pm a number of buildings throughout the city including The Senned, Pierhead Building, City Hall, Cardiff Castle, the Norwegian Church and the Cardiff Harbour visitor centre, will switch off their lights.

Earth Hour was devised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness about global warming and it is the third year Cardiff has taken part.

Pledging support for the event, Jane Davidson, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, said: “The Welsh Assembly Government is supporting Earth Hour as a simple yet powerful way to demonstrate how everyone can play their part in the fight against climate change.

She added: “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we all face today and cutting down on the energy we use will be one of the most effective ways to reduce the CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change.”

WWF’s Earth Hour 2010 aims to unite the world’s people to demonstrate their concern about climate change.

It will let world leaders know the world is still watching, following the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in 2009, and expects them to take urgent action to tackle climate change.

Last year Earth Hour was a huge success, reaching millions of people across the world and famous faces, including Leona Lewis are on board to make this year’s event bigger (as #Tweet_Cardiff reported earlier this month).
Cardiff Council leader Cllr Rodney Berman, said: “We all have to take responsibility and help tackle climate change. Earth Hour is a great way for everyone to reflect on how our actions are harming the planet.”

Go on: Turn off the light!
