#MusicMonday: Touchfinder

Touchfinder, the Welsh trio consisting of Toby Townrow, Richard Page and Rob Swords have taken time out to talk to @Tweet_Cardiff about touring, making an album and all the stuff in-between

How did you guys get started as a band?
Rich (bass) used to be in a band with Dai Smith (ex-Storeys guitarist/songwriter) and played in a Frank Zappa tribute band and I (Toby – singer/guitarist) used to have a solo acoustic act. Rob (drums) has played in loads of bands, most notably Black Sabbath tribute band Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. We all worked at the ntl: call centre in Swansea and decided to get a band together that became Touchfinder.

How long have you been together? Rich and I have been writing since the end of 2008 and Rob joined in October 2009.

What’s been your fave gig so far?
I think it was the Red Stripe Music Awards in Cardiff Barfly a few weeks ago – really good atmosphere. Also our first gig with Rob when we launched our album in October. That’s OUR album called “THE ART OF FIGHTING WITHOUT FIGHTING” available from all good digital retailers (SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT!).

Any backstage info from behind the scenes at your gigs?
Rob has no drum stool and consequently borrows any available chair to sit at the drums with. What a crazy guy! And let’s face it, most of the venues we’ve played haven’t even got a backstage.

Who are your musical influences?
I think we all grew up listening to bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jane’s Addiction, Faith No More, early Metallica, Living Colour and the other thrash bands of that time. We also like a lot of different bands individually – Rob likes Alice Donut, Fugazi, Black Flag and Dead Kennedys and some other bands I can’t remember. Rich LOVES AC/DC, Incubus, Ratt, Motley Crue and I like Muse, Goldfrapp, Queens Of The Stone Age, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead and the Foos. And we all love a bit of Frank Zappa!

What would you be doing if you weren’t in the band?
Rob says, he’d be in another band. Rich says he’d also be in another band. And I would sulk.

Where do you see yourselves in five years time?
Doing this full-time and quitting the day job.

Any diva demands backstage?
Rob demands an end to the smoking ban, Rich demands sandwiches with the crusts cut off and I demand tea (decaff only after 4pm).

Which three guests would you invite to dinner (dead or alive)?
Well there’s three of us so that’s one each. Rich would go for Steve McQueen, Rob is going for Hitler and I’ll have Billy Connolly.

Anything you guys would like to add? Don’t eat yellow snow. Don’t worry be happy. Enjoy the journey.
