Flanker relegated to sin bin following drink and drive arrest

Rugby star, Andy Powell’s career in international rugby is uncertain following his arrest for allegedly driving a golf cart whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Powell, aged 28, was arrested just hours after Wales defeated Scotland at the Millennium Stadium for driving the buggy towards the M4.

The Wales back row forward has earned 14 caps and was stopped by police at a service station near junction 34, where he failed a breathalyser test.

It is believed the golf buggy was taken by Powell and one other unnamed 28-year-old from the Vale Resort, Golf and Spa Hotel, a four star hotel in Hensol, Vale of Glamorgan, that is used by the Welsh squad for press conferences and to stay when they have a home game.

Inspector Tony McAlinden of South Wales Police said: “I can confirm that two 28-year-old males were arrested on suspicion of taking and driving away a golf cart.

“One of the men subsequently failed a breathalyser,” he added.

Brecon born Powell is expected to appear in court next month.
