Love is in the air…

Cupid’s arrow has struck the city as couples walk arm-in-arm down Queen Street, last minute lovies scramble to find a makeshift gift for their loved one and shops and restraunts are adorned with red heart-shaped balloons and banners.

For the fact lovers amongst us: Valentine’s Day has contestable origins, the first being a link back to the aincent wedding between Greek God, Zeus and Hera.

There’s also the priest (Valentine) who carried on marrying couples in Rome, despite a ban by Emperor Claudius II who feared men were not joining his army as they didn’t want to leave their loved ones behind. For carrying out these secret weddings, St. Valentine was killed.

Traditionally, love spoons are given to a partner here in Wales with locks, keys and hearts being the most popular designs for the wooden symbol of love.
